Providing Technical Assistance to Affordable Housing and Urban Renewal Program

  • City: Ulaanbaatar
  • Client: Asian Development Bank (ADB)
  • Country: Mongolia
  • Date: 2016 (ongoing)

AHI was contracted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to be the Affordable Housing Specialist on a team that is providing technical assistance for the ADB Affordable Housing and Urban Renewal Project. The project is a complex multisector project requiring full scale due diligence in technical, economic, financial, social, resettlement, environmental, and institutional aspects. The goal of the project is to improve housing conditions in the Ulaanbaatar ger areas (semi-formal settlements). The project outcome will be the establishment of replicable, sustainable, and comprehensive solutions for affordable housing and ger area redevelopment. The project is expected to have four outputs: (i) mixed-use, mixed-income, and resource efficient ecodistricts built in ger areas; (ii) established mechanisms for delivery of affordable housing units; (iii) improved urban redevelopment process and standards; and (iv) strengthened project management and institutions for urban redevelopment and affordable housing. This work builds directly on the Affordable Housing Strategy that AHI created for the Municipality of Ulaanbaatar in 2014, which was approved as municipal policy in May 2015.
