WHY DONATE TO AHI?
Public housing, circa 1960
LIHTC New Construction Rental
Building a house is a clear benefit, and easy to see. Building a system that finances, supports, and encourages the creation of affordable housing for families and individuals is much harder to do, and much harder to see -- but its long-term benefits, in country after country, are immensely greater because it enables those countries to create more housing.
Our accomplishments
At the Affordable Housing Institute, we help governments and non-profit organizations throughout the world develop systems that create affordable housing:
- In South Africa, we helped the major banks create initiatives under the landmark Financial Sector Charter.
- In Kenya, we worked with UN Habitat and Kenya's Ministry of Lands and Housing to design a possible slum upgrading entity and lending facility.
- In Egypt, we developed a business plan for the country's Guarantee and Subsidy Fund.
- In Ireland, we're working with the Affordable Homes Partnership to develop a long-term affordable renting and leasing program.
In addition to these specific tasks, we've participated in symposia, brainstorming sessions, and stakeholder roundtables and workshops; and contributed numerous articles and papers on topics that matte to housing program advocates in those and other countries. We publish extensively, making research, findings, and advice freely available on our Web site and elsewhere.
AHI's role and our influence have been growing steadily. The work is complicated and its results are in words and laws and programs, not brand-new homes and happy families. Yet, if the rapidly urbanizing world is to have safe, healthy, and pleasant places to live, our work is essential -- as our partners around the world recognize.
Our Goals
Our next goal is to establish structured country assessments of the housing finance ecosystem of several emerging countries around the world, as a platform for policy makers in those countries and in multilateral and bilateral funders and donors.
Any contribution will assist us in our mission.
